Alsta Surf N Ski

Surf n Ski

The Surf n Ski was the obvious choice for the next watch from the new Alsta.

Another rugged outdoors timepiece that was inspired by the original Surf n Ski. This was was targeted at the wrists of the glamorous ski crowds of Aspen and St Moritz and the Californian surf scene.

Our attention to detail in recreating the Surf n Ski as close to the original as possible was uncompromising. Wherever we could we make make technical, safety or performance improvements, bearing in mind advances in materials and movements since the 1970s, we have made them.

The result is a beautifully styled and manufactured timepiece that oozes the same romance and charm of the original but with modern-day materials and technology. The case of the original Surf n Ski was 33mm however we have made the new one a more contemporary 40mm.

Quality engineering manufacture and design will always be hallmarks of Alsta watches.

except for the movement, the Alsta Surf n Ski is manufactured and assembled in Switzerland and Germany and the NH35A movement is manufactured by Seiko of Japan.

Technical

Alsta timepieces are made to be robust and withstand the pressures of the ocean floor, the knocks of climbing or descending the highest peaks, the vibrations and shocks of racing on the water, snow or track.

In addition to being manufactured and tested to withstand the roughest conditions, Alsta timepieces are also made to be beautiful and elegant in appearance in order to be worn for any occasion be it in the workplace or when dressed that little bit smarter.

The Alsta Surf n Ski is an outdoors watch that is styled to be worn on any occasion. It is even made to be used as a dive watch and therefore has a unidirectional bezel which removes the risk of it being accidentally turned while underwater which could result in a fatal miscalculation of dive time. The original Surf n Ski was made waterproof to 666ft however, tempting as it was to recreate that wonderfully eccentric 666ft, we decided to manufacture and test the new Surf n Ski to withstand the pressure of depths of 999ft which is 300m or 29 atm, the same as the Nautoscaph.

The Surf n Ski is manufactured and tested to be anti-magnetic to a field strength of 4,800 A/m (ISO 764 compliant) and shock-resistant to ISO 1413 standard which should be sufficient for knocks endured on the snow, the ice or the waves.

Case

The Surf n Ski case measures 40mm and is cast from 316L grade Stainless Steel. Grade 316L is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade which means it has high corrosion-resistant properties and particularly high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. It is also anti-magnetic.

The case is coated with a matt black non-reflective PVD finish. The PVD is applied by a chemical PVD plating process which should not be confused with the lower quality painted finish often found on watches. Our process alters the colour of the steel at a molecular level ensuring robustness even with heavy use. The coating will not however withstand heavy case damage or being worn away by continual heavy abrasion.

Like all of our watches, we recommend that if you submerge your watch in salt water regularly or for long periods of time that you give it a quick rinse under fresh water after submersion.

Crown

The Surf n Ski crown forms part of a triple-lock mechanism that ensures the water resistance of the watch. The crown itself is domed like the original and is PVD coated the same as the case.

Glass

The Surf n Ski domed glass is a hardened mineral crystal which may scratch easier than sapphire crystal, however, we chose mineral crystal for this watch as it is generally more resilient and less brittle than sapphire and therefore is less likely to shatter and let water in. Light scratches are relatively easy to remove by polishing and if the scratches are deeper, you can return to us to have a replacement fitted. Our crystals are tested for toughness and contain an anti-reflective coating on the inside to aid clear vision.

Like the original, we wanted the Surf n Ski to be true to its heritage and have a lovely domed crystal therefore we used the super-domed crystals which we designed and manufactured originally for the Nautoscaph II. We have made improvements performance-wise in that original Surf n Ski contained plexiglass which is more prone to scratching.
