Alsta’s latest release – The Nautoscaph Superautomatic 50th Anniversary Edition!
At Alsta there is a fascination with romanticism. Pieces are not only expected to be aesthetically pleasing but also to evoke feelings. These watches are designed to create a conception of escapism and excitement and nostalgia. Our newest model is no exception.
1970-2020
50 years ago the Nautoscaph was born, and we want to capture that significance and pay homage to a legendary sports watch. The result is the Nautoscaph Superautomatic 50. Way back in 2019, we released a faithful re-edition of the watch worn by fictional Oceanographer Matt Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss. To kick off 2021, Alsta is releasing a limited number of 50th Anniversary pieces featuring a gilt dial, hands and bezel. Te piece is manufactured and assembled entirely in Switzerland with a Sellita SW200 movement, one of the most precise and trusted movements in the world.
A Gilt Dial for the Golden Anniversary
Gilt dials on sports watches are, to us, one of the quintessential features of true watch romance. More commonly found in the 1950s and 1960s when Rolex used them on their early sports watches, they became much less common in the decades that followed. Due to their rarity, gilt dials are among the most sought-after and valuable among the different types of vintage sport watches.
Gilt dials are easily identified by the gold text that appears on their surfaces. Unlike later-era sport dials in which the text, minute track, and logos are printed mainly in white. Today, gilt dials are still not commonly found. Few vintage watches have them due to their short production life and on modern sports watches, perhaps the gilt dial is seen as a relic from the past.

At Alsta we knew the only way to pay homage to the original Nautoscaph was to go above and beyond. We are proud to release the Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic 50 as we continue to bring the romance back to sports watches.
